THE SOLAR THERMAL HEATING SYSTEM

Components of the system:

  • Solar collectors
  • Thermal reservoir
  • Heating equipment
  • Control system

Solar Collectors:

(Solar collectors on rooftop)

  • A transfer medium (water or air) is circulated through the collectors to absorb the sun's heat
  • Typically located on the roof of a building
  • Various types are available: Flat plate, evacuated tubes, concentrating reflectors, etc.

Thermal Reservoir:

  • Essentially just a water tank
  • The water stores heat collected by the solar collectors
  • Must be very well insulated and able to withstand high temperatures
  • The larger the tank the more heat is can store
  • Domestic potable water can be preheated via a heat exchanger

Heating Equipment:

(Heating pipes in a concrete slab)

Transfers the heat collected from the sun to the areas to be heated. Examples are:

  • Slab heating
  • Ducted heating
  • Radiators
  • Underfloor heating
  • Forced convection

Control System:

(Manifold and actuators for slab heating)

Controls the solar and heating equipment to maximise efficiency and comfort. Can include:

  • Thermostats
  • Solar controller
  • Pumps
  • Manifold actuators
  • Zone valves
  • Relays
