THE
SOLAR THERMAL HEATING SYSTEM
Components
of the system:
-
Solar
collectors
-
Thermal
reservoir
-
Heating
equipment
-
Control
system
Solar
Collectors:
(Solar collectors on rooftop)
-
A transfer
medium (water or air) is circulated through the collectors to absorb
the sun's heat
-
Typically
located on the roof of a building
-
Various
types are available: Flat plate, evacuated tubes, concentrating reflectors,
etc.
Thermal
Reservoir:
-
Essentially
just a water tank
-
The water
stores heat collected by the solar collectors
-
Must be
very well insulated
and able to withstand high temperatures
-
The larger
the tank the more heat is can store
-
Domestic
potable water can be preheated via a heat exchanger
Heating
Equipment:
(Heating
pipes in a concrete slab)
Transfers the
heat collected from the sun to the areas to be heated. Examples are:
-
Slab heating
-
Ducted heating
-
Radiators
-
Underfloor
heating
-
Forced convection
Control
System:
(Manifold and actuators for slab heating)
Controls
the solar and heating equipment to maximise efficiency and comfort. Can
include:
-
Thermostats
-
Solar
controller
-
Pumps
-
-
Zone
valves
-
Relays
